CATEGORIESLarge Welded Frames Need Dimensional Control After Welding
For large industrial frames, maintaining the required geometry after welding is often as important as fabricating the steel structure itself.
Hongming Sheng reviews frame squareness, diagonal dimensions, mounting surfaces, hole positions, and equipment interfaces together with the welding sequence and fixture method.

The drawing should identify the critical relationships that need to remain correct in the completed frame.
| Control Area | What to Review |
|---|---|
| Overall Squareness | Check width, length, and diagonal references across the structure, rather than only individual tube dimensions. |
| Mounting Surfaces | Review equipment mounting areas against the final frame datum and required alignment. |
| Hole Relationships | Confirm the relationship between anchor holes, brackets, and mounting patterns after welding. |
| Frame Flatness | Define the requirements for base rails and support points where the frame sits on a floor, machine base, or other assembly. |
| Parallel Interfaces | Review spacing and alignment between opposing rails, brackets, or mounting plates in the finished frame. |
Welding DistortionWeld heat can move tubes, plates, and brackets. Movement may accumulate across several joints. Fixture design, welding sequence, temporary bracing, weld placement, and intermediate dimensional checks can be reviewed according to the design. | Post-Weld MachiningSelected mounting faces, precision hole patterns, or reference surfaces may need machining after welding. Where specified and feasible, these interfaces can be machined relative to the completed frame rather than the pre-weld components. | Modular StructuresOversized frames may be divided into welded subassemblies connected by bolts or other mechanical interfaces. This can simplify manufacturing, finishing, transport, and final installation when a single welded assembly is difficult to handle. |
| Overall Frame Dimensions Length, width, height, and assembly size. | Tube, Profile, and Plate Specifications Material grades, sections, and thicknesses. |
| Critical Mounting Surfaces Equipment interfaces and alignment requirements. | Datum and Reference Dimensions Drawing references for checking final geometry. |
| Floor or Equipment Mounting Points Anchor positions and connection details. | Post-Weld Machining Requirements Faces, holes, and features requiring final machining. |
| Surface Finish Coating or other specified treatment. | One-Piece or Modular Structure Subassembly divisions and joining interfaces. |
